HMS Recruit was a fast, Clydebank class destroyer which came into service in 1900 and at the start of the war she became part of the Nore Local Defence Flotilla. Her duties included anti-submarine and counter mining patrols in the Thames Estuary.

On 1st May 1915 she was on patrol in the southern part of the North Sea, not far from the Norfolk coast, when she was hit by a torpedo fired by the German submarine U6 after which she broke in two and sank. Charles Collier was one of the 39 crew members who was killed out of a total of 65.
